"I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota (a land of disputed ownership by the Lakota) and as a child I was told Indians and skunks were about the same…both useless. At the age of 68 I learned my father was 1/8 Illini Indian.
As far as I know, he never knew of this long kept family secret. I have always been fascinated by Native American cultures, but kept it a secret. Since his passing in 1991 I have created numerous paintings with Native subject matter. It has helped me resolve my sense of guilt for my own past opinions and feel a sense of pride in the tiny part of me that shares this heritage."
